Introduction
Noticing a lack of formalised co-ordination and communication channels between industry players, Lin He Wei, founding president of the Taiwan Spectacles Industry Association (TSIA), filed an application to the Ministry of the Interior of Taiwan to set up TSIA. After several months of negotiations and preparations, the association was formed on 15 April 1974.

Since 1997, TSIA has organised Taiwan manufacturers to join international optical events, such as MIDO International Optics, the Optometry and Ophthalmology Exhibition (Italy), the Silmo International Optics and Eyewear Exhibition (France), the International Optical Fair Tokyo (Japan), the International Vision Expo East and West (US), the China International Optical Fairs, the HKTDC Hong Kong International Optical Fair and the Imported Optical Fair Taiwan.

After five decades of continuous efforts made by the first generation of the optical industry, the younger generation is now taking over the helm to push the industry ahead. Recognising younger entrepreneurs’ competitive edges in language proficiency, product design, manufacturing technology and marketing capabilities, TSIA is committed to drawing on these strengths to foster further industry development. The second-generation operators were invited to establish the Young Alliance, through which regular or irregular meetings are held with senior members of the industry for exchanging experiences and views. Such concerted efforts will help to address the challenges that the industry faces and build a strong foundation for a smooth and steady growth going forward.
