Hong Kong is a dynamic business, financial, trading and logistics hub, as well as a leading design and innovation centre. As one of the freest economies in the world renowned for the ease of doing business, our city is home to close to 9,000 overseas and Mainland Chinese companies, with more than 1,400 operating a regional headquarters here, in addition to some 2,400 regional offices and some 5,100 local offices.
Financial centre and innovation and technology hub
With a total market capitalisation of about US$3,362bn at the end of October 2022, the Hong Kong stock market is the sixth largest in Asia and ninth largest in the world. Known for its status as an international financial centre that enjoys the dual advantages of “One Country, Two Systems”, Hong Kong is an ideal platform to seize the opportunities arising from the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA).

With the Central Government’s unwavering support for Hong Kong demonstrated through China’s 14th Five-Year Plan, the blueprint and action agenda for the social and economic development of China in the next five years, our city is poised to maintain long-term prosperity and stability. On the development of the GBA, the Plan highlights the deepening and widening of mutual access between the financial markets of Hong Kong and the Mainland, as well as the strengthening of exchanges and co-operation between Hong Kong and the Mainland on different fronts, including the Shenzhen–Hong Kong Loop as a major platform of co-operation in the GBA.

Hong Kong is well-positioned to develop innovation and technology, especially in biotechnology, artificial intelligence, smart city and financial technology. Overseas talents are most welcome to work in Hong Kong and to enjoy the vibrancy and dynamism of our city.

ASEAN connectivity
ASEAN is a region that is rich with potential. Hong Kong’s role as an important entrepot between Mainland China and ASEAN provides a strategic platform for ASEAN businesses and investors to tap into the opportunities offered by the BRI. In recognition of Hong Kong’s status as an international city, the Plan supports Hong Kong to foster co-operation and exchanges with countries and regions around the world. International business communities can leverage on the city’s unique advantages to access both the Mainland Chinese and ASEAN markets.

With the Hong Kong and ASEAN Free Trade Agreement and Investment Agreement fully coming into force in February 2021, there are greater legal certainty, better market access and fair and equitable treatment in trade and investment, thus creating new business opportunities and further enhancing trade and investment flows between Hong Kong and ASEAN. Hong Kong is well-poised to further enhance its role as a facilitator and promoter to help nurture trade and investment on the multilateral front.

Hong Kong Economic and Trade Offices
With locations in Jakarta, Singapore and Bangkok, the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Offices represent the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) in matters between Hong Kong and ASEAN as a whole and also bilaterally with individual ASEAN member states. The three offices work closely with governments and agencies, business associations and professional bodies, as well as media and think tanks in the ASEAN region to promote bilateral ties in various arenas, such as trade and investment, culture exchanges, and economic and technical co-operation.
