Electronics Trade Gaining Traction through 2025

Electronics orders in the city are expected to remain firm through next year — a view acknowledged by many of the participants in the Hong Kong Electronics Fair (Autumn 2024) survey. 1,089 industry players took part in the survey, with nearly 40% expecting sales to grow in the short term (the next 6 to 12 months), while more than half shared the same optimism for the medium term (the next 12‑24 months).

Overall, the electronics industry appears to be fairly optimistic for sales in 2025. Artificial Intelligence (AI) was identified as the strongest and most advantageous I&T development for the industry. 

Most respondents were confident about their business outlook in 2025. The adoption of new technology is viewed as the opportunity which offers the greatest potential for development, as cited by 39% of respondents. 33% saw recovering purchasing power as the second most important driver of increased sales/revenue, 28% identifying rising demand from the emerging markets, and 27% selecting business leads driven by e‑tailing.

Which Electronics Categories Will Be the Most Popular?

In terms of specific electronic product categories tipped to do well, smart home/smart living products came top of the list. 22% of respondents picked it as the category with the greatest potential for growth in 2025. This was followed by home appliances and electronics/electrical accessories (both selected by 18%). Also singled out by significant numbers of respondents were mobile devices/accessories and audio‑visual products (both 13%), wearable electronics (12%) and medical/healthcare electronics (10%).

What is the Role of AI in Electronics Industry This Year?

Generative AI continues to be seen by respondents as the technological development of most importance to them. Among those who currently use or plan to use the technology, product design and development (cited by 52%) and customer service and support (38%) were seen as the most popular areas of application.

Meanwhile, more than 90% of respondents said that they think the trend of adopting Generative AI will become more significant or even mandatory in the next 5 years.

Electronics Business: From Offline to Online

E‑commerce continues to be a key distribution channel for the electronics industry. Most respondents indicated that they had already developed an online sales option, with 61% saying they currently engage in online trading. 48% use both physical and online channels, and 13% use online channels only.

Summary

Electronics traders see hope in a number of popular product categories such as smart home / smart living products, home appliances and electrical accessories. They also foresee a significant increase in AI adaptation and e-commerce.
