US Turns Home Batteries Into a “Virtual Power Plant”

The US state Vermont is turning thousands of ordinary homes into a resilient “virtual power plant” by leasing home battery systems through the state’s largest utility, Green Mountain Power (GMP). The core idea is that batteries (and, where present, rooftop solar, demand response devices, and potentially EV batteries) are coordinated by software to act like a conventional power plant — without physically generating electricity in the same way. Instead, the system manages and “releases” stored energy when the grid needs it most, improving resilience during extreme weather.

Power Plant of the Future

By aggregating consumer flexibility, GMP’s virtual power plant has become Vermont’s largest power source, providing about 110 MW of capacity. It supports outage prevention and helps cover peak-demand needs that previously relied on expensive and polluting “peaker plants.” GMP’s broader goal is eliminating all power outages by 2030, supported by the battery program alongside measures such as undergrounding lines.

Global Insights for Buyers & Suppliers

  • Procurement opportunity: Virtual plants can reduce reliance on peaker generation and provide grid services, potentially lowering system costs and improving reliability.

  • Business model matters: Structural barriers include utilities lacking incentives to procure flexibly, so contracts that share value (reliability, avoided outages, capacity/peak benefits) are critical.

  • Scalability factors: Success depends on enrolment mechanics, interoperability (hardware + software orchestration), and integration into electricity markets.

  • Next-stage asset: EV “vehicle-to-grid” could dramatically expand distributed storage, but cost-effectiveness and coordination challenges remain.

  • Customer value proposition: Residential savings and autonomy (especially during storms) drive adoption — key for any region building consumer participation.
