Japan has voiced its opposition to the European Union’s potential proposal to expand international trade regulations on all eel species under the Washington Convention (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, CITES)<\/em>. By advocating for science-based policy and collaborating with key partners like China and South Korea, Japan aims to ensure that trade in Japanese eel remains open and stable.<\/p>

Japan has already informed the EU that Japanese eel is not at risk of extinction from international trade, emphasizing that current sourcing arrangements can continue safely. However, international buyers and suppliers in the food and seafood sectors should closely monitor these CITES discussions as any new regulations could affect sourcing strategies and compliance requirements.<\/p>
