AI leaders are openly debating whether the world’s most advanced AI development should be intentionally “slowed,” despite the commercial and geopolitical incentives to keep pushing capabilities faster. The Associated Press (AP) reports that prominent figures tied to companies including Anthropic and OpenAI — along with others in the frontier AI space — say safeguards are needed because the technology’s risks may grow faster than society’s ability to manage them.

Proposals discussed include meaningful third-party safety evaluation. One idea highlighted is frontier labs providing “ongoing, employee-like access” to independent outside evaluators, giving them offices, access badges, and company laptops to monitor safety practices.

How Does This Relate to Global Trade?

For global buyers and suppliers, the practical takeaway is that AI governance is likely to become a procurement requirement, not a public-relations add-on. Look for:

  1. clearer auditability and evaluation rights

  2. contract clauses tied to safety performance and incident reporting

  3. supply chain resilience plans as model release schedules and compute availability shift

Also expect increasing scrutiny around collaboration: policy and legal systems may treat “slowing” and shared standards differently depending on jurisdiction.
