Brief Introduction to Polydatin
Polydatin, commonly known as Polygonin in Chinese, is a naturally occurring stilbene compound with a core molecular structure of 3,4',5-trihydroxystilbene-3-β-D-glucoside. It can be regarded as a glucoside derivative of resveratrol (formed by the combination of resveratrol and a glucose molecule via a glycosidic bond). This structural feature gives it advantages over resveratrol in terms of water solubility and bioavailability.
Main Sources
The natural sources of polydatin are concentrated in a variety of plants. The most important raw material for its extraction is Polygonum cuspidatum—a herbaceous plant with a long history of application in traditional Chinese medicine, where the rhizome part has a relatively high polydatin content. Additionally, small amounts of polydatin are also found in grapevines, peanut skins, Polygonum multiflorum (he shou wu), and other plants.
Application Scenarios
At present, the application of polydatin is mainly concentrated in the scientific research field, where it is a common research object in natural medicinal chemistry and pharmacology. Meanwhile, it is also used in small quantities as a raw material in health products and cosmetics (based on its antioxidant properties).
