Shangrao is located in the north-east of Jiangxi Province. It neighbors Quzhou City in Zhejiang Province to the east, Wuyishan City in Fujian Province to the south, Huangshan City in Anhui Province to the north, Nanchang City to the west and is close to Poyanghu Lake. It is known as the “passageway of four provinces” and the “superior rich land”.
It occupies an area of 22,800 square kilometres and has a population of 7.6 million. In 2013, its GDP was US$22.59bn, and its revenue was US$3.7bn. It is the second largest city in Jiangxi Province and one of the four most important developing cities in the province.
It is an open city, approved by the State Council, governing Shangrao, Guangfeng, Yushan, Yanshan, Hengfeng, Yiyang, Wuyuan, Wannian, Yugan, Poyang, ten counties and Xinzhou District, including the management of Dexing City.
Shangrao, which has remarkable geographical advantages and transport links, is well-connected to the Changjiang and Zhujiang Delta and also the south-east of Fujian Delta alongside developed coastal areas in the south-east.
