Haematococcus Pluvialis(HP) is a freshwater species of green algae Chlorophyta.
HP is is well known for its high content of astaxanthin - a kind of powerful antioxidant widely used in health supplement, cosmetics and aquaculture.
HP cell will produce astaxanthin repaidly when its under pressure, for example under bright light, low availability of nutrients. Stressed HP cells appear red in colour as a result of astaxanthin accumulation.
