Oribe-ware Sencha Tea Set
Oribe-ware is a major branch of Japanese Mino ceramics (alongside Shino and Seto-guro), representing a highly distinctive glaze style in historical Japanese pottery.
Mino artisans and kilns — such as Hachiro Suzuki and Seizo Kato — mostly gathered along the border of Aichi and Gifu Prefectures. Utilizing local clay, water, and firewood, alongside unique kiln-building techniques (including the use of semi-underground kilns, flame-dividing pillars, and flame-raising walls), they masterfully combined copper-green and iron glazes. This craft created everyday tea pottery with a unique aesthetic that has been widely cherished worldwide for centuries.
This tea set includes a side-handled teapot (kyusu), a water cooling bowl (yuzamashi), and five small cups. The vivid copper-green glaze accented with iron glazes, combined with the intentionally asymmetrical, organic forms, perfectly embodies the classic characteristics of Oribe-ware!
