How latching RCDs work:
When the power is lost due to an earth fault, the RCD trips out and isolates the circuit it is protecting. It continuously compares the current flow in both the active (supply) and neutral (return) conductors of the circuit. When the current flow becomes unbalanced, some of the current in the active conductor leaks to earth without returning through the neutral conductor.
