- Origin: Our "Grand Cru" single vineyard SCHLOSSBERG is a rising western-facing slope that opens like an amphitheatre to the river Rhine. The 45 year old vines grow at an altitude of 170m to 230m above sea level. The soil structure is marked by heavy clay with iron-oxides interspersed with limestone. Limestone is the predominant component of the subsoil, too.
- Vinification: In late October, the grapes are picked exclusively by hand at the ideal moment of their ripeness. The pressing, the vinification and the winematuring takes place in our winery in Saulheim. Prior to pressing, we leave the crushed grapes 18 hours on their skins to extract a maximum of flavour compounds. The musts are fermented spontaneously with natural yeast in old, up to 50 years old German oak barrels with a capacity of 600 litres. After a maturation of 7-8 months on the fine lees, the wines are bottled in the summer following the harvest.
- Wine characteristics: In the nose yellow fruits and hints of flint. Ripe, lush and full of juicy peach, apricot and tangerine flavours, this dry Riesling has a full-bodied style that’s densely textured on the palate. Great balance, precise acidity and intense salty mineral flavours, that linger endlessly on the palate.
