A WATCH MADE FROM COFFEE! We present the world's first watch made from recycled coffee. When it comes to sustainable living, the Coffee Watch is a true innovation, featuring a case made of used grounds from Berlin cafés and roasting houses, transformed into an extremely durable material through a complex upcycling process. The shapes, colors, texture, and even a subtle aroma reveal what the watch is made of – and it's completely carbon-neutral to boot. All these things make it a genuinely loving tribute to the greatest of all hot drinks!  THE PERFECT SHAPE Made of recycled coffee grounds, the watch case is reminiscent of a coffee bean or a coffee cup, depending on how you look at it. The especially round, minimalist appearance of the watch was created using a special trick: the crown is completely recessed into the case back. The pure, straightforward design philosophy is greatly enhanced by the clean, silvery sunburst pattern of the watch face and neatly engraved hour marks.  INNOVATIVE MATERIAL We get the material used for the case from various cafés and roasting houses in Berlin. The coffee grounds are collected by bicycle couriers, then transformed using an incredibly innovative upcycling process developed by our partner, Kaffeeform. Only plant-based components are used in the process; as a result, the finished material is not only durable and retains its shape, but is also completely environmentally friendly and fully recyclable.  UNIQUE PIECES MADE FROM COFFEE Even at first glance, it's immediately apparent what the case is made of: The natural coloring and fine texture of the coffee grounds are fully preserved. As a result, each watch features a slightly different grain pattern, making every individual Coffee Watch a one-of-a-kind timepiece! And the origin of the watch is not only visible, by the way – for a while even a subtle coffee scent remains.  RESULT OF A LENGTHY PROCESS The story of the Coffee Watch begins with a coffee cup made from recycled coffee grounds and produced by Kaffeeform. It didn't take long before the idea of making a watch out of them was born, but that was easier said than done. The composition of the material had to be adapted to make it durable, comfortable to wear, and resistant to scratches. After three years of development, the world's first watch made out of coffee was quickly financed on Kickstarter, and now and can be owned by anyone.  GAME-CHANGING QUALITY The Coffee Watch is one of our most challenging projects yet. After all, we're dealing with a completely new material. Lucky for us, our watch is manufactured right here in Germany, and we are able to rely on the absolute skill and expertise of our partners. Thanks to the level of quality that goes with the "Made in Germany" label, our watches are guaranteed to last, which is one more factor in our commitment to sustainability.

CelluFilm: Bio-fabricated Leather-like Film of Bacteria Cellulose This project develops CelluFilm, a biodegradable leather alternative free of animal and plant materials, to reduce the impact of traditional and synthetic leather. Made from bacterial cellulose (BC) produced during kombucha fermentation with fruit waste, the process generates minimal wastewater and avoids toxic chemicals, offering a low-impact, sustainable option for small leather goods. ApplicationThe leather-like film is intended suitable for making small goods such as wallet and name card holder.Industry BenefitAn eco-friendly alternative to genuine and synthetic leather Leather industry is expected to gain significant growth, with the global leather goods market size valued at USD 242.85 billion in 2022 and estimated CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 6.6%. Following the high demand to leather comes the increase in production of leather, which would impose huge environmental impact such as toxic materials generated during the production processes.  Plant-based vegan leather has been a hot topic to replace the use of genuine leather. Various kinds of product such as pineapple leaf fibre leather have been available in the market. Plant-based vegan leather leaves less carbon footprint than genuine leather, but polyurethane (PU) or Polyvinylchloride (PVC) is needed to be added to ensure good leather properties. The use of such non-biodegradable and petro-based chemicals will create sustainability issues. Besides, plant growth takes time and requires larger piece of land. The cultivation of bacterial cellulose is easier and faster than plant growth and stock breeding. The source of bacterial cellulose can be originated from fermented kombucha drink. By making good use of the beverage waste, this project can develop a more eco-friendly material for making small leather-like goods such as wallet and name card holder. AI-Powered Smart Garment Sorting System for Recycling This smart, automated sorting system provides an effective and efficient solution to sort reusable and resalable postconsumer garments by using artificial intelligence and image analysis. The integrated system comprises four highly customisable AI-backed modules connected by a conveyor path with robotic arms to identify garment type, fabric structure, material composition and colour. The four modules can be operated as stand-alone units or arranged in different order to carry out specific sorting tasks and business operations. In terms of performance, the fabric structure module operates at 95% accuracy while other modules operate at over 90% accuracy. This system is able to sort bulk garments effectively and generates a full set of results in eight seconds, eliminating most manpower requirements and minimising hygiene concerns. The value of the recycled garment materials can be maintained, extending the garment lifecycle while contributing to the sustainability and eco friendliness of the industry.  Application Garment sorting system can be installed for industrial use in textile recycling stations. Equipped with our AI machineries and its proprietary AI algorithms, the system analyses and identifies garment types, materials, and fabric structure automatically to provide data for operators to make decision over recycling, for instance, if the garment is suitable for recycling or what kind of recycling approach to be adopted.  Process of Post-consumer Garments Sorting Post-consumer garments are collected, fed into the system, and validated through visual technology that can automatically classify garment types, garment composition and garment structure with high accuracy and speed by analysing the visible and hyperspectral spectrum. Parameters are set for matching spectral patterns for further textile upcycling process. Classification modules are interlinked with each other via a central system and hereby achieving complete traceability. Result generated in downstream modules are cross-checked with the upstream modules to ensure consistency. The garment delivery process is aided with automated devices that can reduce manual control. The whole garment sorting system is flexible; and can be customised to suit operators’ need, for instance, the order of the working steps or the database for garment recognition.  Industry Benefit As more fashion brands are being aware of using recycled materials, the smart garment sorting system can fill the technological gap that encourages post-consumer garments recycling. It can help fashion brand reduce the demand of virgin fibres and becoming more sustainable, while reducing disposal of post-consumer garments to the landfill.
