Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) enjoys pride of place as the premier institution among the public sector banks in the country. IOB was founded in 1937 before World War II. Shri M Ct M Chidambaram Chettiar, the founder, was a man of remarkable foresight and vision who focussed on overseas banking and foreign exchange business as the primary activities that the bank would concern itself with. 
IOB commenced operations on Feb 10, 1937. On the very first day of its operations, it has opened its first overseas branch, in Rangoon, simultaneously with its Madras and Karaikudi offices, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Singapore offices were opened soon after that and by 1969, Malacca and Hong Kong were also added to IOB's expanding vistas. As of 31/3/2009, IOB has over 2000 branches in India and abroad manned by a dedicated and committed work force. There are hi-tech Agri branches and SSI branches in Mombai and Chennai and more are planned for the future. 
The first Indian Bank to open an overseas branch, IOB has been a pioneer right from its inception. IOB has always been at the forefront in devising and implementing new, beneficial schemes for its valued customers. For the second consecutive years, JOB is listed in the covered 2000 Top Corpotakes in the World as perv Forbes 2000 marking. IOB is one among the BO Indian Business to be ranked in the list.
