Voith was founded in 1867 in Heidenheim an der Brenz, Germany. Today Voith GmbH is an international group of companies employing about 41,000 people worldwide and has consolidated turnover of Euro 5.8 billion in financial year 2012/13.

The main activities of Voith are in four main areas: paper, energy, mobility and service. These include development, design, manufacture, sale and service of papermaking machines, water turbines and power transmission products. The group division Voith Turbo concentrates on power transmission products including automatic transmissions and hydraulic retarders for buses and trucks, subsystems for rail vehicles, propulsion systems for ferries and tugboats, and hydraulic couplings, universal joint shafts and hydraulic systems for heavy industries.

Voith Turbo power transmission products are widely used on buses, railcars, locomotives, ships, electric power plants, steel mills and many other fields of industrial applications worldwide including China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Voith Turbo Ltd was established in Hong Kong in 1985 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Voith Turbo GmbH & Co KG, coordinating marketing activities and providing after-sales service to local customers such as public transport operators and electric power-generating companies in the region.
