LunaMicro provides active moisture management technology for the next generation of smart textiles. Our technology is a textile that, when connected to a battery, actively transports moisture from one side to the other.
Active transport of moisture means that our technology moves liquid moisture (not just vapor), even against a pressure gradient (e.g., when it’s wet outside) from, for example, the inside of a jacket to the outside. Our patented conducting polymer electrodes make our pumps thin, flexible, lightweight and very effective.
The textile pump is a multi-layer construction with two conducting polymer electrodes, screen-printed onto separate pieces of our customers’ choice of fabric. These electrodes are laminated to opposite sides of a nanoporous membrane, creating the pump. The result is a thin, flexible multi-layer textile that drives water from one side to the other via electroosmosis when connected to a small battery.
Current performance waterproof garments rely on laminated membranes, which are composite materials. These materials present significant recycling challenges and may contain environmentally concerning PFCs (Polyfluorinated compounds). Our technology puts the moisture-management burden on our active pump, which is typically the size of an A4 piece of paper (actually, 18 x 24 cm). Since this area is sufficient to transport the sweat that an active person normally generates, the rest of the garment can be made from a sustainable and PFC-free mono-material, such as natural rubber or polyester, instead of a non-recyclable composite. This means that at least 80% of, e.g., a jacket can be made recyclable by installing LunaMicro’s moisture management technology. At the end of the garment’s life, the pump (and the electronic control module) can be removed and the rest of the garment can be recycled.
