Japanese Sake

Koya brewery Co., Ltd.

The Mogami River, which originates at Mount Nishi-Azuma on the border of Yamagata and Fukushima prefectures, has long been the most vital waterway for the industry, economy, and culture of Yamagata Prefecture. Our brewery is located in Shimizu, Okura Village—a site within the Shinjo Basin where the Mogami River shifts its course westward. From the Sengoku period until relatively recent times, this area served as a crucial logistics hub, holding the exclusive right to manage the transshipment of passengers and cargo onto local river vessels.

Our family has been deeply intertwined with the Mogami River’s waterborne transport system. From the early Edo period through the Meiji era, we served as village headmen (*shoya*) and wholesale merchants (*tonya*), and operated as an official lodging (*honjin*) for various *daimyo* (feudal lords). We were also entrusted with managing river transport vessels for the Uesugi clan of the Yonezawa Domain.

It is said that our sake brewing business was founded in the second year of the Bunroku era (1593).

Given our role as an official lodging, we maintained strong ties with the Shinjo Domain. Furthermore, it is said that *daimyo* such as the Sakai clan of the Shonai Domain (including the Matsumine branch) and the Satake clan of the Akita Domain enjoyed our sake while traveling to and from Edo as part of the *sankin-kotai* (alternate attendance) system.

Additionally, Okura Village is home to the Hijiori Hot Spring resort—a destination with a 1,200-year history that has long flourished as a staging point for pilgrims and travelers ascending Mount Gassan. Over the years, our sake has been cherished by the many visitors who have passed through this area.
