In 1991, the Swiss winery owner Jacques Germanier decided to extend his business in South Africa, buying Sonop, a 120 ha wine farm. 

Today African Terroir manages a large volume of grapes in the Western Cape, ensuring the constant production of and high quality of its wines. A large part of our vineyards are surrounded by mountains. When you combine this with the variety of rich soils and ideal climatic conditions, it is understandable why our grapes are of superior quality. The cool sea breezes coming from the Atlantic Ocean allows for temperatures that are best for the production of healthy, high quality grapes. 

African Terroir's quest for such quality begins in the deep fertile soil where careful canopy management together with night and hand harvesting, helps us to transfer the grapes at its optimum ripeness in the grapes to our high-tech facilities.

The combination of stainless steel tanks and new French or American 225 litres oak barrels, enable our winemakers to demonstrate all of their passion and dedication for producing excellent wines. After 15 years, we are one of the prominent organic farms in South Africa.

All this does not happen without hard work and perseverance. The wine export market has changed a lot since 1991.
