The Australian Government releases its latest combined merchandise and services trade outlook in the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ International Trade: Supplementary Information, Calendar Year 2025, which shows a country that still ran an overall surplus, but with meaningful shifts in both partners and composition.
At the headline level, Australia’s balance on goods and services was a surplus of $6.9b in 2025. On the credits and debits side, total exports rose $20.3b (3.1%) to $665.2b, while total imports increased $42.6b (6.9%) to $658.3b. This implies imports grew faster than exports even though the net position remained positive.
China Remains Australia’s Top Export and Import Partner in 2025, But Export Values Soften
Looking specifically at partner countries in 2025, Australia’s top 5 export partners for merchandise trade and services exports were China ($195.6b), Japan ($65.1b), the United States ($59.9b), South Korea ($44.2b), and India ($32.2b) — together accounting for 59.8% of exports. China fell slightly, Japan declined more sharply, while the United States rebounded strongly (up $18.9b), and South Korea and India showed smaller but notable movements.
On the import side, Australia’s top 5 import partners were China ($130.2b), the United States ($98.6b), Japan ($32.4b), Singapore ($28.2b), and Thailand ($23.6b), making up 48.9% of imports. China again dominated, with the United States also rising solidly, while Japan’s change was minimal.
Trade Partners Concentration Deepens
Overall, the 2025 data highlights partner concentration alongside uneven bilateral momentum — especially the contrast between slower/declining exports to some Asian markets and strong import/external demand shifts involving China, the United States, and other major hubs.
Global buyers and suppliers looking to build resilient supply chains can capitalize on these shifting import and export demands to strategic advantage.
